What is Pilates?
"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness"
Joseph Pilates
Pilates is an exercise method that was created by Joseph Hubert Pilates over ninety years ago. The Pilates method of body conditioning treats the body as an integrated system and focuses on training the mind and body simultaneously. The results are enhanced mental productivity and a balanced, fit body that work efficiently together to revitalize the spirit.
The ultimate form of Pilates is mat work. The mat uses vigorous body weight exercises and choreographed movements to strengthen and tone muscles. Additional benefits include: realignment of the pelvic and shoulder girdles; decompression and elongation of the spine; stabilization of spinal, pelvic and abdominal muscles; and increased flexibility and balance. Working on the mat makes the body and mind powerful and will enhance your ability to meet the demands of all of your activities, from routine tasks of daily living to athletic endeavors.
Pilates implemented spring-based exercises into his system which became the foundation for the apparatus. Springs are used to provide resistance to challenge and support the body while eliminating excess tension and strain on the joints. Combining the apparatus: the Reformer, and Cadillac and Wunda Chair, with mat work will help you break the unhealthy movement patterns, which can lead to chronic pain and injury. This approach literally, re-teaches your brain to create, more efficient, sound movement patterns and enlightens your mind to the ways in which a strong, balanced and graceful body feels.
At Sculpt we offer a variety of mat and reformer classes based on the system that Joseph Pilates developed to enhance your physical fitness and well-being.
